STATEMENT

Shoko Hirose

Contemporary Artist / Illustrator

Tokyo-based contemporary artist and illustrator.

Graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts in 2018, majoring in Oil Painting.

After working as a designer in the video game industry, Hirose now develops her practice across both contemporary art and commercial illustration.

Hirose’s work explores contemporary perception in which the boundaries between information and materiality, fiction and reality have become increasingly ambiguous. By combining digital imagery with oil paint, resin, reflective materials, and semi-sculptural layered structures, she examines how images acquire physical presence and how material objects are transformed into information.

Under the name Hirose, she is also active as a commercial illustrator, producing work for video games, publishing, music, Hatsune Miku-related projects, and other forms of visual media.

Statement

My practice is based on the concept of “A Life Without Reality,” exploring contemporary perception in which the boundaries between information and materiality, fiction and reality have become increasingly ambiguous.

As digital imagery has become fundamental to how we perceive the world, our understanding is shaped not only by physical objects, but also by images, symbols, and virtual spaces circulating through digital environments.

Information, despite lacking physical substance, can acquire a presence that rivals or even exceeds reality, while bodies, cities, and material objects are themselves transformed into images to be edited, reproduced, and consumed.

My process begins with imagery constructed in a digital environment, which is transferred onto canvas or acrylic supports using UV printing.

Layers of oil paint, resin, glitter, reflective materials, and semi-sculptural structures are then introduced onto the surface. By intervening in uniform digital information through material phenomena such as gravity, bleeding, physical thickness, and reflection, I create works in which fiction is transformed into a tangible object.

The figures and urban landscapes that appear in my work are not intended to represent fixed narratives. Rather, they function as visual devices through which contemporary perception—where bodies and symbols, memory and data, reality and fiction coexist—is made visible.
