STATEMENT

Shoko Hirose

Contemporary Artist / Illustrator

Tokyo-based contemporary artist and illustrator.

Graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts in 2018 , majoring in Oil Painting.

After working as a designer in the video game industry, Hirose now develops her practice across both contemporary art and commercial illustration.

Her work explores the contemporary visual experience in which information and materiality, fiction and reality continuously intersect. By combining digital imagery with oil paint, resin, and semi-sculptural layered structures, she examines how images acquire physical presence and how material objects become consumed as information.

Under the name “Hirose,” she is also active internationally as an illustrator, producing works for video games, light novels, and Hatsune Miku-related projects. Moving fluidly between contemporary art and commercial image-making, her practice investigates the evolving role of painting in the digital age.

Statement

My practice is based on the concept of “A Life Without Reality,” exploring contemporary perception in which the boundaries between information and materiality, fiction and reality have become increasingly ambiguous.

As digital imagery has become the foundation of how we perceive the world, our understanding is shaped not only by physical objects but also by images, symbols, and virtual spaces circulating across digital environments. Information, despite lacking physical substance, has acquired a presence that often rivals or even exceeds reality, while bodies, cities, and material objects are themselves transformed into images to be edited, reproduced, and consumed.

My process begins with digitally constructed imagery transferred onto canvas or acrylic using UV printing. Layers of oil paint, resin, glitter, reflective materials, and semi-sculptural structures are then introduced onto the surface. By intervening in uniform digital information with material phenomena such as gravity, bleeding, physical thickness, and reflection, I create works that visualize the transformation of fiction into tangible objects.

The figures and urban landscapes that appear in my work are not intended to represent fixed narratives. Rather, they function as visual devices through which contemporary perception—where bodies and symbols, memory and data, reality and fiction coexist—is made visible.

Alongside my contemporary art practice, I also work internationally under the name “Hirose” as a commercial illustrator, producing artwork for video games, light novels, and Hatsune Miku-related projects. Moving between fine art and commercial illustration, I continue to explore the nature of painting and images in the digital
